How to make a resume

Writing an effective and creative resume that gets results can be a daunting task. But if a few of the simple things are taken care of, your chances of being shortlisted for the interview enhance significantly.

  • Assess your strong points. Be honest in listing your strengths.

  • Provide your full name and contact information on top of the resume. The information that you give must be accurate. Always add an alternate email address, if any, in the contact details.

  • State your objective in precise words. For example, it could be to utilize your skills in information technology.

  • Give complete information about your educational background. It should show your skills in a particular field. The degree you last obtained should be mentioned first.

  • Include the name of the company, the city in which the company is located, your title, your duties and responsibilities, and the dates of employment for each employer.

  • Under each job description include a bold heading, which reads "major accomplishment" or "achievements", and list two or three achievements or a major accomplishment for that position. For instance, you could list ways you saved the company money, made the office run more efficiently, or brought in new clients or customers.

  • Cite your work experience, if any. Use action verbs to describe your current or past job responsibilities. Name the organization you worked for along with the relevant dates.

  • Note the specific skills that you have acquired from your professional experience that may be useful in the job you seek.

  • Write about your achievements and extracurricular activities, and any prizes you have won.

  • Provide references, if needed. These can be the names of your previous employers or your top contacts in the same field. Before giving the name of someone as reference, always get his or her permission.

  • Create your resume in a format that is easily readable. Use standard fonts that are simple and easy to read, such as Arial, Helvetica, Futura, Verdana and Times New Roman.

  • Use font sizes ranging between 10 to 12 points.

  • Justify the entire resume on the right and left.

  • Provide enough space between headings to make the resume look uncluttered and organized.

  • Spell-check the entire resume carefully. Your resume should be error-free. Any small mistake can create a negative impact on your job prospects.
