This sector in India is the third largest in the world in terms of volume and is ranked 14th in terms of value. This sector is one of the largest service sectors in India, in terms of revenue and employment. Due to the presence of low cost manufacturing facilities and availability of educated and skilled manpower and cheap labor force, the industry is set to scale new heights in the fields of production, development, manufacturing and research. A large chunk of revenue of Indian pharmaceutical companies comes from exports. The Indian pharmaceutical market reached US$ 12.5 billion in size in 2011. The Indian healthcare industry is estimated to reach over US$ 75 billion by end of 2012 and US$ 100 billion by 2015. The Indian pharmaceuticals market is expected to reach US$ 55 billion in 2020. This exponential growth has opened a window of opportunities in the field of manufacture of medical devices, as well. The intensifying competition in pharmaceutical sector has lead to high attrition rate. Drugs having estimated sales of over US$ 100bn are expected to go off patent between CY 10 and CY 14.
